What to watch

Dangerous goods are classified in nine UN hazard classes and regulated by IMDG (sea), IATA DGR (air), ADR (road, Europe) and RID (rail). Correct classification, packing, marking and declaration are legal obligations of the shipper.

Carriers and airlines can refuse DG or restrict classes; some classes and UN numbers are not accepted on certain services.

Lithium batteries have their own air-transport packing instructions and state-of-charge limits.

Surcharges for DG apply and differ by carrier.

Shippers need trained personnel for DG declarations; misdeclaration carries heavy penalties.
