What to watch

Unpacked, free-flowing cargo such as coal, iron ore, fertilizer, cement clinker and grain is moved in bulk carriers on voyage or spot charter. Smaller lots can go in 20' containers with liners or bulk bags. Cargo surveys at load and discharge port are standard.

Solid bulk cargoes that can liquefy (e.g. nickel ore, some mineral concentrates) must be declared with moisture content and transportable moisture limit under the IMSBC Code.

Laytime, demurrage and port draft limits drive cost more than the base freight.

Coal and some concentrates can self-heat or emit gas; the shipper must declare the cargo group correctly.
